Sustainable Christmas Tree Care

Are you hoping to have a real Christmas tree in your home this holiday season? We know the internal debate on whether to go plastic or authentic can be difficult, especially when you’re considering tradition, convenience, and the environment. We pulled together some options that should cover everyone’s holiday wishes and some tips on how to extend the life of your tree.

Local U-Cut

If you’re thinking of buying a tree just for the season, try heading to a local U-cut or tree farm. Not only is it a festive activity to get into the holiday spirit, but you’re also supporting a local business and your local ecosystem! In addition, getting a tree freshly cut will keep your tree lasting longer. If you can’t pick one up fresh, give the tree trunk a quick trim before placing it in water. Water your tree immediately and make sure to check the levels daily. You also want to make sure your tree is away from any heat source (heating vents/fire places) to keep it from quickly drying out. When you are done with your tree for the season, add it to your compost or check to see if your city has any tree recycling programs.

Living Christmas Tree

Do you have a bit of yard space? Why not get a living tree this year and plant it straight into your yard once you’re done with it for the season. If you are local to the PNW, caring for a Christmas tree just got a little easier, since trees traditionally used for Christmas thrive in this climate. Most Christmas trees fall under firs, but there are also spruces and pines or even cedar. Try heading to your local nursery, to find a living tree, they’ll be able to provide you information on the right care for your particular variety and environment. Add a couple of tablespoons of Clean Water GROW All-Purpose Food to your soil before planting to make sure your beautiful holiday momento will last for years to come. And next year, you can decorate it outdoors!

Potted Christmas Tree

The great thing about potted Christmas trees is that you can start small. If you’re tight on space or worried about curious toddler hands or cat paws, a small potted tree might be your safest option. These can also make thoughtful holiday gifts! Treat it like just another houseplant (until it grows too large for indoors). Add a couple of tablespoons of Clean Water GROW All-Purpose Plant food to the soil to keep it growing strong.

Rent a Tree

There are many services out there that now allow you to rent a living tree! If you don’t want to commit to keeping a tree long-term, renting a tree is a great option to experience the live tree but also not worry about the tree going to waste at the end of the season. These services will pick up your tree after the holidays and continue to care for it for its full life.

We hope you can find the perfect tree this year! Happy Holidays.
