How to Pet-Proof your Houseplants

Both houseplants and pets can brighten up our spaces and lives. You might not know that many popular houseplants are toxic to pets. There’s nothing wrong with a curious pet, who might take a nibble at your plants every once in a while. But it’s good to make sure that they aren’t accidentally chewing on something toxic. Let’s create a harmonious environment for our plants and pets.

Regardless, your pet shouldn’t be munching on even your non-toxic plants regularly. Too much of anything not suited for animals to eat can be harmful to consume.

What if I already have plants and I’m hoping to get a pet or hoping to accommodate for a pet?

If you already have an indoor jungle established and are introducing a new pet to your environment, there are some easy fixes to accommodate your new pet. Start by evaluating your pet's personality. Dogs are playful and curious, and they are more likely to do some chewing on your plant’s low to the ground leaves. Cats can reach much higher spaces, but they’re more dismissive personalities lead them less likely to take nibbles of your plants (that’s not to say they won’t have a blast knocking a plant from a high shelf). If your pet has a calmer and less inquisitive disposition, you might be safe to have your plants in their reach, but just keep a close eye on them. Otherwise, move your plants onto a higher, sturdy surface. Or transfer your plant to a hanging basket.

What if I don’t see my plant on the list?

There are many more plants on both the toxic and non-toxic lists. So if you fall in love with a new plant or pet, just do a quick search.

What if I suspect my pet ate some of my toxic plants?

Call your vet, immediately.
